Operated by volunteers, Sutherland Shire Historical Society’s Museum serves the schools, families, leisure groups and visitors to our Shire.
We aim to preserve the history of our unique place in Australia’s past as the
location of Captain Cook’s landfall in nearby Botany Bay.
Come and view, and touch if you wish, a section of the actual Ballast from his ship
The Endeavour. Walk through the replica 1920 schoolteacher’s house originally
constructed in nearby Menai with its kitchen, bedroom, parlour and simple classroom.
Step back in time as you discover the history of our Shire. From the lifestyle of the
Dharawal people to the recent acquisition of Parke Davis’ entire pharmaceutical exhibits
we are constantly adding to our displays.
Don’t miss the extensive Rupert Gough and George Heavens photographic collections.
Nearby Royal National Park is the oldest in Australia, second in the world, its evolution
from untouched bush to recreational parkland has been lovingly recorded by them.
The building itself is typical of early 20th century architecture and situated conveniently
two minutes walk from the railway station, opposite the main bus shelters.
On-street parking available.
Remember the famous quote ‘the past is a foreign country,
they do things differently there’…come and explore the past with us.
